History and Mission

The Slavic Club was originated in 1990 by Professor Anna Kuchta and currently it has over 250 members of Czech, Polish, Russian, Ukrainian, Slovak, Bulgarian, Croatian, Serbian, Irish, Macedonian, Moldovan, Belo-Russian, German, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, Brazilian, Chinese, Afro-America and American backgrounds.

The Club brings together students, faculty, administrators and other members of our community to enjoy Slavic traditions, cultures, music and foods through educational lectures; recreational activities; Slavic films; trips to ballets, plays, museums and Brighton Beach; through Easter Egg Decorating Workshops; Global Poetry Readings and much more.  Slavic Club works to expand SHU’s students knowledge about the Slavic countries by working together with our growing Russian and East European Studies Program, with the School of Diplomacy, the History Department, SGA, SAB, MLK and with other clubs and organizations on campus.

Slavic Club’s goal is to continue its deep commitment to the mission of Seton Hall University. Its members strive to become outstanding, tolerant and compassionate “servant leaders in today’s global society” by being truly community minded.  The Club strives to "build bridges while bridging the gaps." Slavic Club always sponsors cultural and educational activities, which are opened to the whole Seton Hall University’s community. We welcome new members regardless of their ethnic, racial or religious backgrounds.

In addition to enriching and benefiting the SHU community socially and culturally, Slavic Club raises the overall academic experience for our students by drawing them into our Russian and East European Studies Program.  Being exposed to a new culture during Club’s weekly meetings sparks an interest of many of our members in Slavic studies who then decide to pursue the Certificate and/or minor in our Russian and Eastern European Studies Program and study Russian.  By taking this challenging language, culture, or history courses, our students are bettering themselves by giving themselves a unique addition to their resumes in today’s global society.

Our Club embraces members from all backgrounds, allowing them to learn about their different cultures without complexes or prejudices. By learning about and exploring each other’s cultures, the members become one large, extended family, based on friendship and mutual understanding. The Slavic Club is a collection of enthusiastic and determined individuals that exemplify an unparallel commitment to their work for the benefit of our SHU community.

While focusing on the vision of the Seton Hall community to foster better understanding and commitment among all organizations, the Slavic Club has tried to expose our campus community to the awareness of different Slavic cultures and concerns through a well planned diversification of lectures not only by our own distinguished faculty members, but also by well known and respected international experts on Russia the Eastern Europe.  Activities hosted by our Club have been a great learning experience not only for its own members but also for the Seton Hall community members who have attended them.

The Slavic Club has a 17 year history of impressive community service at Seton Hall University, and in the process has received numerous citations for outstanding service, including such prestigious awards as: “Organization of the Year” and “Faculty Advisor of the Year.”
