Maslenitsa, February 16th,
2004
Maslenitsa was initially a pagan celebration of the God & the Sun. People made
sun-shaped pancakes, as a symbol of the arrival of the Spring. The pancakes were
supposed to be hot, as the sun, itself, and were mostly eaten outside people’s
homes. Maslenitsa celebration was also accompanied by: singing, riding horses
and dancing. Today, Maslenitsa is being celebrated as a part of the Russian
religious tradition -- by eating lots of blini before the beginning of the Lent.
