Policy on Advisement

Some students who have disabilities may be in need of dual advisement. The role of DSS in this process is not to assist students in course selection as far as degree requirements are concerned, as that is the role of the academic advisor. There are times, however, when students may need to plan class times and locations around medical or mobility needs. Some students with disabilities may need to consider the amount of information they need to learn and retain over a period of time, and therefore it would not be advisable to take two courses one right after the other without a break. Others should not take several courses during the same semester that could be greatly impacted by their disability. There may be other types of special needs that students have that would also need to be addressed.

Planning for advisement will be discussed as an accommodation for each semester, so students who will be in need of dual advisement know that they need to meet with their DSS case manager prior to meeting with their academic advisor during the advisement period. The DSS case manager will contact the advisor directly to discuss any special needs that the student may have.
