Re : University to Use Mobile Messaging to
Alert the Seton Hall Community in an Emergency

Date : Thursday, September 27, 2007

Seton Hall University cares about your safety. In fact, the well-being of the entire Seton Hall community is our highest priority.

For that reason, the University regularly reviews and, if needed, updates its Critical Incident Management Plan to ensure that our policies and procedures are comprehensive and adequately address the needs of our community during an emergency.

Recently, in light of the tragedy at Virginia Tech, Seton Hall determined that providing information and direction to our campus community quickly and efficiently during an emergency is of utmost importance. Text messages were judged to be one of the best ways to reach out to our community when an emergency occurs on campus.

We urge you to sign up for this important service.

Emergency text message alerts will be brief, as there are limitations to the number of characters that can be transmitted, and will simply provide information on location of emergency and instructions on the action to take. Alerts will still be posted to our existing media (www.shu.edu, the Seton Hall web page, and on-the campus telephone system at 973-761-9000), which may also be used to provide more detailed follow-up information, if necessary.

To receive the emergency notification on your cell phone, you must OPT IN. That means that you must sign up for this service. To do so, log on to www.shu.edu, the University’s home page, click on my web/web mail in the upper right hand corner, log in to MyWeb using your user name and password, which will bring you to the MySHU page.  In the tools box on the left side of the page click on Mobile Messaging at the bottom of the list.

If this is your first time using Mobile Messaging you will be walked through the subscription process.  Once you enter your cell phone information, be sure to subscribe to the group called “SHU Broadcast” to receive emergency alerts from the University.

For detailed instructions on how to subscribe visit:  http://technology.shu.edu/page/mobilemessaging

If you are unable to log in or have any additional questions please email or call the Technology Help Desk at heldesk@shu.edu or (973)275-2222.

BE ASSURED THAT SETON HALL WILL NOT SHARE YOUR NUMBER WITH ANY OTHER PERSONS OR ORGANIZATIONS AND WILL ONLY USE THIS NUMBER IN THE EVENT OF AN EMERGENCY UNLESS THE NUMBER YOU PROVIDE IS ALSO YOUR UNIVERSITY BANNER CONTACT NUMBER. IN THAT CASE, YOU MAY BE CONTACTED FOR OTHER REASONS.  NOTE: NORMAL TEXT MESSAGING RATE WILL APPLY, PLEASE CHECK WITH YOUR CARRIER.

Naturally, we hope this system is never necessary. But in case it someday is needed, we want to reach as many of you as possible. We urge you to take advantage of this important technology. OPT IN today.
