Experiential
Education: Frequently Asked Questions
What Experiential Education Programs are available at Seton Hall?
Experiential Education is an educational strategy in which students
apply factual, practical and theoretical knowledge in a real-world work
experience. Programs include
internships,
service learning, practica,
clinicals,
student teaching and community service. The common
element of these programs is that all provide the student with the
opportunity to combine classroom learning with "hands on"
work and learning experiences.
Who should participate?
All students who want to test possible career paths, develop skills,
confirm their choice of a major, begin to develop a professional
network and generally "stand out from the crowd" should
consider experiential education.
When can I participate in Experiential Education Programs?
Students can participate in community service activities during their
first year at the University. Participation in a
Internship can
begin as early as the summer after Freshman year. Students who have
completed 30 credits are eligible for internships. Transfer
students need to have completed at least one semester at SHU. While
The Career Center assists with student preparation for all
experiences, students should contact their individual academic
departments for specific information about programs other than
cooperative/internships.
Internship:
How many credits can I receive for my Internship?
Depending upon your academic department, you may receive from 1 - 3
credits in a semester. For more specific information, you will
need to consult with a career professional at The Career Center or
your department's co-op faculty advisor.
Non-credit bearing
internships are also available for SHU students.
What are the GPA requirements?
Students need to maintain a minimum GPA of 2.5 (3.0 for graduate
students) to participate in the internship program.
Are Internship Positions Paid?
Most internship employers seeking SHU students offer paid
experiences. Since some industries typically do not offer salaries to
undergraduates, The Career Center also provides access to excellent
non-paid opportunities for students.
How many hours do students work in a internship position?
Students enrolled in credit bearing experiences work between 15 - 35
hours per week. Students enrolled in non-credit bearing experiences
are expected to work a minimum of 12 hours per week.
How can I apply for internship positions?
Navigator/eRecruiting is The Career Center's primary online
internship and career management system. Employers who have
partnered with the University post positions on this site. All SHU
students who contact The Career Center will be given access to the
system.
