EXPLORATION: RESUME
WRITING
TEN-POINT RESUME
CHECKLIST
Before actually writing
a resume, take time to reflect on your experiences, skills and
achievements. The following checklist will assist you in the resume
development phase.
- Assess
your interests, experience, values and skills and explore jobs that
are a good “fit” for you so that you can identify
organizations/companies or schools where you wish to send your resume.
- Write
an objective statement that clearly states your goals. This will
assist you in the writing process as much as it will aid an
employer/school considering your application.
- Draw
attention to any honors, awards, achievements and/or certificates that
you received in college, in your activities, or in employment. This
will help you stand out as an individual.
- Record
all previous and current work experiences, including volunteer work
and internships. Include related skills (e.g. computer,
languages), responsibilities and achievements. Make sure that all of
your time periods are accounted for. Be certain that you are truthful
and honest in reporting your background and accomplishments.
- List
activities, memberships and leadership positions you hold or have
held. Be sure to eliminate any controversial activities or
associations from your resume.
- Review
lists from items 3,4 and 5 to determine which experiences are most
relevant to the position/program to which you are applying.
- Prioritize
your experiences. This will assist in determining an order for listing
specific responsibilities as well as in deciding which experiences can
be eliminated if space does not permit.
- Using
the above information, you are ready to begin writing. Develop a first
draft of your resume. Schedule an appointment with a career
professional to critique your resume.
- Show
your resume to a person (e.g. professor, supervisor, employer, friend
or family member) in the field you are entering for additional
feedback.
