RESUME WRITING: SECTIONS
TO INCLUDE ON YOUR RESUME
I. Objective
- A professional objective should be a
concise, specific statement of your career goals and/or interests;
- Your objective should be consistent
with your education, background or experience;
- Avoid clichés, such as “a challenging
position” or “opportunity for advancement;” these phrases are vague
and meaningless to an employer;
- Do not include this section if you are
unable to be concise, specific or consistent.
II. Education
- Name and location of all institutions
attended in reverse chronological order;
- List college within the University (i.e.
College of Arts and Sciences, College
of Education
and Human Services, W. Paul Stillman School of Business);
- List degree (expected or earned), graduation
date, major and GPA (if 3.0 or higher).
III. Honors
- List honors, awards and scholarships,
if applicable;
- Honors may or may not be academic.
IV. Skills
- Include special skills, such as computer
competencies, foreign languages, or any other technical skills in your
field
V. Experience
- List full-time, part-time, volunteer,
internship, co-op or other experience in reverse chronological order
or by special sections categorized by job type;
- Include name and location of organization/company,
dates employed and your job title;
- Describe your responsibilities, achievements,
skills gained, training received or performed, etc.;
- Consider using bullets and begin phrases
with action verbs to emphasize performance;
- Utilize transferable skills for non-major
or career-related jobs (e.g. waiting tables, retail, work-study jobs).
VI. Activities
- List extracurricular activities, both
on and off campus;
- Include positions or offices held within
an organization.
VII. References
- Not necessary to include as a section;
- If you have a portfolio or samples of
you work (e.g. Art or Education Majors), write “References and Portfolio
Available Upon Request”
VIII. Other Sections to Consider
- Professional certificates or licenses;
- Publications;
- Memberships/Affiliations;
- Military experience (if applicable).
RESUME FORMAT OPTIONS
Chronological Resume
This type of resume lists most recent experiences
first and proceeds backward over time. It highlights relevant experiences,
skills and achievements, as well as provides a list of duties performed,
emphasizing those requiring the highest level of competency, responsibility
and judgment.
Functional Resume
Structuring this resume requires more creativity.
It groups particular “skill sets” together under appropriate headings,
such as “Teaching and Training,” “Sales” or “Management.” This type of
resume highlights special functional areas related to your career goals;
it may be a good choice if you are changing careers and wish to focus
on your skills, or if you have limited relevant experience in your field.
Combination Resume
This type of resume incorporates elements
of both the chronological resume and the functional resume. Experience,
skills and achievements are highlighted; no standard format exists.
