Experiential Education
In today's competitive job market, experiential education gives students an advantage in the classroom and in their careers. Employers rank relevant experience highly when selecting future employees.
The Career Center is the place to go to learn about the importance of career relevant work experience prior to graduation. Some experiential education opportunities that exist for Seton Hall students include: cooperative education/internships, service learning, practica, clinicals and student teaching. The common element of these programs is that all provide the student with the opportunity to combine classroom learning with "hands on" work and learning experiences.
Cooperative Education/ Internships
The Career Center sponsors over 300 students in cooperative education/internships per year. Cooperative education and internships provide students with the opportunity to explore career interests by obtaining valuable work experience prior to graduation. Students work 15 - 40 hours per week, gain critical work skills and professional contacts, and earn a salary to offset educational expenses.
To be eligible to participate in a internship, students must be matriculated and in good academic standing at the University.
Students who elect to earn academic credit for their cooperative education/internship experience must obtain approval from a faculty advisor. Faculty advisors approve the work experience for academic credit, help students articulate learning objectives and evaluate and grade the learning experience.
Students who are not interested in obtaining academic credit for their cooperative education/internship experience will work closely with a career professional from The Career Center. A prerequisite of sophomore standing (30 credits) is recommended. Academic departments may have additional requirements for credit-bearing internship experiences.
Students who are interested in obtaining an experiential education opportunity (cooperative education and/or internship) should make an appointment with a career professional at The Career Center, who will guide them through the process.
Career Success Workshops
Seminars and hands-on workshops assist students with career assessment, selecting an academic major and job searching strategies. Topics include: resume and cover letter writing, goal setting, skill identification, interviewing techniques, developing portfolios or preparing personal/career statements, career search and networking strategies, and graduate school preparation.
Employer /Alumni Career Networking Events
The Career Center has forged strong partnerships with hiring employer organizations that specifically recruit Seton Hall students and alumni. Recruiting employers and alumni serve as career mentors and participate in networking events throughout the year to identify talent for their organizations.
Networking events include the following; "Oh! The Places You Can Go!" alumni/employer networking forums that target specific industry areas; the annual Job Fair that hosts more than 150 employers; the annual College of Education and Human Services Career Fair, and the annual Nursing and Health Professions Job Fair.
Virtual Career Resources
The Career Center's homepage provides 24/7 (24-hour, 7 days-a-week) access to: employment postings (e.g. internships, part-time jobs and full-time professional employment opportunities); a calendar of events including career workshops, career fairs and employer information sessions; a career management plan; and over 200 links to career management resources and job banks.
Career Navigator is The Career Center's internal online internship and full-time professional job listing and resume posting system. Navigator also offers online resume books and the opportunity for students to network with alumni through the Internet. All students must register and construct a resume online with The Career Center.
Alumni Network
As a member of the Seton Hall University community, alumni remain involved with The Career Center and the University by participating in career networking events, serving as career mentors and recruiting students for internships and full-time professional employment opportunities. Alumni are invited to join the online "Pirate Navigator Alumni Mentoring Program" to assist fellow alumni and students with career transitions.
